The Department of Physiology and Biochemistry was founded in 1945 since the foundation of the Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture. The head of the department was assistant professor of the Yerevan Medical Institute G.Musheghyan.
Six months later, the assistant professor H.Stepanyan was elected as the head of the department. The department was reinforced with new staff.
In 1979 the head of the department was Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor R. Harutyunyan.
Over 10 training aids have been published by the staff of the department. It should be also mentioned that assistant professor of the department V.Nikolyan was included in the complex scientific service group of the USSR Olympic team in water polo. Assistant professors of the department E.Haykazyan, J.Abgaryan, R.Matevosyan and senior laboratory assistant M.Asatryan carried out medical biological service of the national teams of Armenia in winter sports.
In 2004 under the leadership of the Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor M. Aghajanyan the department was renamed into the Department of Physiology and Sports Medicine.
During 2005-2008 the duties of the head of the department were carried out by the dean of the Sport and Health Recovery department, candidate of Biological Sciences, Professor A. Harutyunyan.
In September 2014 the new teaching laboratory was created at the department. The head of the laboratory is M. Sarkisian. The equipping of the laboratory is in process.
In 2017 the chair has signed an agreement within the framework of program "TEMPUS" with Yerevan State University. According to this program our students are acquired a possibility to hold various laboratory classes in YSU related to revealing physiological peculiarities of blood system as well as to realize various scientific research works.
